Physical Education

The physical education (PE) program at CKM strives to develop each student’s potential in physical growth, neuromuscular development, emotional control, and social awareness. PE provides opportunities for students to acquire skills and develop interests in a wide variety of recreational activities. Students are given a sense of achievement and enjoyment through participation. Each student becomes a more highly skilled, physically fit, and well-rounded person.

Freshman activities

CKM freshman participate in general PE classes which provide a sampling of activities throughout a year. Activities offered include:

  • Golf
  • Physical fitness
  • Team sports
  • Paddle tennis
  • Swimming
  • Dance

Elective classes

After their freshmen year, students may continue in general PE or select a PE elective from one of the following activities:

  • Dance
  • Life guarding
  • Net sports (tennis/badminton)
  • Strength development
  • Step aerobics
  • Team sports
  • Yoga

Uniforms

The CKM PE uniform consists of a white T-shirt and cardinal shorts with the CKM logo. During inclement weather, students may wear white or gray cotton sweatpants and/or sweatshirts (these must not have zippers, pockets, writing, and/or advertisements other than the CKM logo). Students must wear tennis shoes and white sweat socks.

The cost of the CKM T-shirts and shorts is $10 for each piece (or $20 total). Students may also purchase sweatpants and sweatshirts with the CKM logo from the PE department staff. A student unable to secure proper clothing should consult his or her PE teacher. At the beginning of the year, the PE teacher marks each student’s clothing pieces with the student’s name in permanent ink (including sweatpants and sweatshirts).

All students must wear the CKM physical education uniform during PE. Students who wear uniforms for other activities—cheerleading, ROTC, school athletic teams, clubs—must dress in the CKM PE uniform during physical education class. Students who wear clothing belonging to others receive a “non-suit” mark for the period. A student’s grade may be lowered due to “non-suits” and those with excessive numbers of non-suits will be referred to the vice principal.

Lockers

Students must provide their own locks for their gym locker. The PE department recommends a quality combination lock; the department sells Master Locks for $5 if students prefer to purchase them directly from the school. Lockers are not to be used to store books or personal items—only gym clothes.

Grading

Daily participation is a major part of a student’s PE grade. All unverified absences, truancies, tardies, non-suits, and poor or non-participation days affect a student’s grade. Students also receive marks for citizenship based on sportsmanship, respect for others, attendance, and tardiness. A written test on activity rules, strategy, and terminology is also considered when grading a student.

Make-ups

Students may make up excused absences during Make-Up PE. A student should check with his or her PE teacher for Make-Up PE dates and times.

Health excuse policy

The following constitutes the policy for excusing a student from PE.

  • Students may be excused from PE participation with a written excuse from a parent or guardian for up to three days; the student must still dress in the CKM uniform.
  • Written excuses must be presented to the teacher at roll call; a note for a previous day’s non-suit will not be accepted.
  • Students who are to be excused for more than three consecutive days need a written medical excuse from a physician.
