While many parents enthusiastically volunteer during the
elementary school years, their involvement often begins to wane in the middle
grades and lessens even more so throughout high school. While the nature of high
school volunteer opportunities may differ from those at the elementary level,
the need for parental involvement is—in many ways—more critical than ever.
At CKM, parents are a welcomed part
of the school and there are many possible ways for them
to become involved. Parents may serve on school
governance entities (such as the School Site Council),
provide support to a sports team, or chaperone a field
trip.
The Sacramento City Unified School
District sets forth policies that schools follow when
recruiting and engaging volunteers. See
Volunteer
Requirements for specific information on donating
your time at CKM.
PTSA (Parent-Teacher-Student Association)
Under the California State PTA,
CKM’s PTSA meets most months during the school and
provides an open forum for parents, teachers, and students with the principal.
Currently, CKM has the largest membership in SCUSD (over 300 members). PTSA
provides support for student activities (Grad Night, testing incentives),
initiates teacher appreciation, and helps with other projects. PTSA volunteers
are also sought after as helpers in the Counseling Office.
HISP Council
The parent body for HISP provides meetings open to all
HISP parents. Enrichment
opportunities (such as college information night, cultural events) are provided
to the entire school body. Volunteers are needed for visitation days, the
end-of-school barbecue, and more.
School Site Council
This elected body oversees the school’s categorical monies—bilingual and Title I
funds. Responsible for CKM’s Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) and the
School Safety Plan (SSP), the council meets on the fourth Monday of each month,
September through May.
Athletics Boosters
For parents of students involved with sports teams, there are booster clubs for
football, cross country, aquatics, track and field, basketball, volleyball, and
baseball—to name a few. Parents can help with a snack bar, distribute uniforms,
plan the end of year banquet, or oversee a car wash.
Clubs
Many clubs need adult volunteers. Parents are invited to volunteer and chaperone
special club activities such as Drama, Junior State of America, Speech and
Debate, and Academic Decathlon as well as ASB (Associated Student
Body)-sponsored dances during the school year.
