Enrollment

Parents are encouraged to learn about the wide variety of high school choices available throughout the district. Important enrollment information is available from the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD).

Enrollment and registration

In the fall of eighth grade, students begin the process of identifying which high school to attend. Some may attend their neighborhood high school; others apply to many of the district’s small high schools or specialized programs which accept students on a space available basis or through a competitive application process. Students attending their neighborhood high school are automatically enrolled based on their address; they are registered in the spring (see “Middle school visits” below). Students applying to specialized programs are enrolled upon acceptance but must register according to instructions in their acceptance letters.

School boundaries and attendance area

CKM’s attendance area is roughly bounded by the American River (north), the Sacramento River (west), Highway 99 (east), and 47th Avenue (south). Parents not sure of their attendance area may call the district at (916) 643-7400 for an accurate determination

High school nights

In the fall, middle schools throughout the district host events to inform students and parents of district’s high school choices. CKM, HISP. AFJROTC, and the Criminal Justice Academy representatives participate in these presentations. Eighth graders and their parents are encouraged to attend. Check with your student’s middle school for exact presentation dates.

CKM and HISP visitation days

Students interested in attending CKM may visit the campus in early December (two days are offered). HISP typically hosts these visitation days. Any student interested in attending CKM (regardless of his or her program of interest) is welcome. Shadow days or personal tours of the school are not available.

Middle school visits

Each February, school counselors begin visiting CKM’s feeder middle schools to register eighth graders to attend their neighborhood school for the fall. Counselors are not registering students for CKM’s specialized program (see more information below).

Freshmen and other new students

See “Open Enrollment” below for information on enrolling students in CKM’s specialized programs—HISP, AFJROTC, Criminal Justice Academy.

Following is information for students interested in attending CKM (excluding special programs):

  • Students living within the CKM attendance area. For middle school students living within the district defined boundaries for CKM, school counselors will visit the district’s middle schools to enroll eighth grade students for their freshmen year.

Non-freshmen students may be enrolled at CKM’s main office on campus. Parents are strongly encouraged to enroll their students as soon as possible once they locate within the school’s attendance area.

  • Students living outside the CKM attendance For students living outside CKM’s attendance area and SCUSD defined boundaries, the school accepts students on a space available basis through either an intra-district or inter-district permit. Call SCUSD’s Student Hearing and Placement Office (916) 643-2175 for assistance.

Open enrollment for HISP, AFJROTC, and Criminal Justice Academy

All prospective students for these four programs must complete the open enrollment process regardless of where they live. In addition to the open enrollment application, students/parents must complete a specialized high school program application unique to each of the following and available from CKM or at SCUSD offices:

For open enrollment, parents may apply on behalf of their students either:

  • In-person at the Serna Center (SCUSD district offices) for three days in January; or
  • Online starting in mid-January and ending in early February.

Specific dates vary by year and are determined by the district. Consult the district’s web page on open enrollment for additional information. This page also frequently asked questions about open enrollment available in multiple languages.

Once your student has been accepted to a specialized high school program, you must register your student. Carefully read your student’s acceptance letter for registration steps and deadlines. Failure to register by the deadline will result in your student losing his/her slot in a program.

Prospective HISP students

Visit the HISP website for more information on applying to and enrolling in HISP and to download the program’s specialized high school application. HISP visitation days typically are held in early December; applications are due in mid-January; and the open enrollment process must be completed from mid-January to early February. Parents and students are typically notified of acceptance to HISP by the end of March.

Returning students

The enrollment process pertains to prospective students (freshmen or other new students). Once a student has been enrolled at CKM, only students on inter- or intra-district permits may be required to repeat the process for subsequent academic school years.
